What makes it cost more
Fabric and design. Basic sets are plain, light polyester. Premium sets have embroidery, gold print or layered skirts, and they look noticeably richer in photos.
Time. Two hours is the shortest slot most shops offer. Four hours and full-day options cost more but take the pressure off.
Extras. Braided hair, hairpins, a small bag, a hat for men, or a photographer. Some packages bundle these, others charge for each at the counter.
Weekends and peak season. Spring blossom and autumn foliage weeks are the busiest. Prices don't always rise, but the cheapest slots go first.
Online or walk-in?
Booking sites often show lower prices than the board at the shop door, and some bundle a discount or a free extra. Walking in is fine on a quiet weekday. On a spring weekend, a booked time means you don't stand in line wearing half a hanbok.
How to keep it cheap
- Rent next to the palace you're visiting, so none of your paid time is spent on the subway.
- Pick a basic set and spend on hair instead. Hair changes the photos more than fabric does.
- Go on a weekday morning. The palace is quieter and the full choice of sizes is still on the rack.
- Remember the palace ticket you're not buying. Free entry in hanbok is part of the deal.
